Twelve Years A Slave

I had been told by colleagues to read this book for a while. Now that I finally got to it, I know that I should have read it much sooner.

No man deserves the ordeal described in this book. Much less deserving is Solomon, one of the most touching and endearing characters that I have ever come across. The author describes an unbelievably dark and shameful period in our nation’s history. What this book has given me is more than just knowledge about the past, but a new outlook and worldview that I now see all around me. I see remnants and continuity into today, when I never did before.

These are not just fictional characters, but our neighbor’s ancestors. We should all pay due respect and I thank the author and Solomon for providing this valuable perspective. Put Twelve Years a Slave at the top of your reading list!
