Review for DJ Rising by Love Maia

So let me start off saying I absolutely love this book. It is about this boy named Marley who attends an elite prep school with a scholarship. He has to work hard for everything in his life: grades, rent money, and living expenses. This is because his mother is a drug addict. Marley’s father died a few years back and that’s when she fell into a deep and horrible downfall. Marley has to work several jobs just to pay the rent and provide for himself and her. Some of the jobs include being a busboy at a swanky restaurant and DJing for private parties. His dreams of becoming a big, full time Dj is fulfilled when he lands at job at the club Cream . This job is the thing¬†of his fantasy and from there he learns more and more the tricks of his trade. A real experienced DJ there lets Marley have the chance of an lifetime: play at his favorite and well-known club, Fever. He is one of six in a competition win a spot on Fever’s spot and also gain recognition from DJing. But what happens when a tragic incident makes its way into Marley’s life right when he is trying to make something of himself and when things are going right? Read the book and find out…

I thought this book was captivating while  being inspiring. I say this because the story was heart warming: a kid being able to live his dreams and achieving what he thought could never happen. It was also sad because of Marley having to support himself: working jobs plus taking care of his mother. I think it is sad that he had to bear that burden while having to worry about grades. This book can be inspiring to some, conveying the message no matter what you go through including deaths of loved ones, that you can aspire to do something that you love and it will happen through hard work. I would recommend this books to teens but some adults could be able to relate to issues shown in it. This book (to me) rates 4 out of 5 stars.
